Attempted Assassination of the President-elect!

February 16th, 1933

The streets of Miami Florida are still in a panic after confirmed suspect Guiseppe Zangara fired five shots through officials and the crowds at the President-elect Roosevelt’s speech yesterday. Zangara lived in the Bayfront Park area where the President-elect was giving is speech, and somehow managed to sneak a .32 caliber pistol into the crowd. Though he hit four pedestrians and Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago, who was standing next to the President-elect at the time, it is suspected that Zangara’s real target was Roosevelt himself. No one knows who hired him, only that Zangara holds all capitalists in contempt. No word yet on whether Mayor Cermak will survive, only that he told Roosevelt these words in the ambulance: “I’m glad it was me and not you, Mr. President.”

We, as a town, are headed into hard times. What we know as normal is being shaken and questioned by those who have no right to change us, or this town. With the upcoming trial of Tom Robinson we will have those who side with our town’s greater good and those who side with a rapist. At the heart of it all we must persevere in our ways, we must continue to teach what needs to be taught and uphold those values that need to be upheld. Know, my fellow Maycombians, that we will get through this together. We will persist. Those that would tell us to change our ways will see the error in there judgment. I myself will muddle through knowing that what we believe is right and natural. Do not get lad astray by these rabble-rousers. As the editor of The Maycomb Tribune I urge you to stand your ground, do not be swayed, know our ideals and know that they are correct. It is with somber feeling that I give you this first edition of The Maycomb Tribune.

The general population here in Maycomb tries to look for inexpensive but trendy clothes. The rich can afford those fancy Paris designers. I personally try to mimic Bette Davis and Greta Garbo, even with the little bit of money I have. They’re both big stars.
The styles these days don’t really change, as much as they used to, because everyone has less money due to the depression. Our clothes need to last longer, since we can’t buy them all the time. The children usually wear overalls, jeans, button downs, or church dresses. Within the women is where you’ll find the types of dresses with prints and waistlines. We usually save the long hem dresses for evening and the calf-lined dresses for daytime events. Our men around here wear those high-waist, wide pants. But if they’re respectable, they know to place a hat on top. This has been your fashion report.

The Entertainment Column

ATTENTION MAYCOMB:

Exciting new cinema films in the world of entertainment were recently released for your eager eyes to pray upon. SNOW WHITE is the first Disney Princess film, so be sure to take all of your little princesses (and princes) to see it. Or maybe you’d prefer to take a family trip to the theater to view KING KONG, an epic film that will most definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. And last, but certainly not least, Margaret Mitchell’s GONE WITH THE WIND, is expected to be voted the best movie of the decade! So if you haven’t seen it yet, I strongly suggest that you do.
Also new in entertainment is DC comics, SUPERMAN. When a regular man by the name of Clark Kent takes off his glasses, he becomes the hero that every boy dreams to be – the man of steel, the man of tomorrow, the last son of Krypton. Call him what you will, he’s an American icon already.
